Our journey begins at Gray Line's office on MLK Blvd and Turner St, where we will board a trolley that will take us down River St. Along the way, we will delve into the stories of enslaved workers who built the warehouses lining the street.
Our walking tour will begin at the African American Monument, where we will discover the path taken by enslaved Africans, from their arrival on the Savannah River to being sold in Johnson Square. As a direct descendant of African slaves from the Georgia coast, our Gullah-Geechee guide promises an enlightening firsthand account of their unbearable struggles and offers a sense of hope for the future.
Throughout our tour, you will learn about the coded language used in slave bills of sale, as well as cultural traditions like rice growing and basket weaving unique to Sierra Leone and Liberia. We'll explore the underground caves beneath Bay Street where enslaved Africans were held captive and discover recent efforts by local activists to provide more accurate information about this dark history.
Our tour concludes at Johnson Square, once a slave auction block, where our guide encourages guests to seek out similar stories in their own cities. We will then ride the trolley to visit other historical sites, including the 2nd African Baptist Church which was part of the underground railroad.
Experience Gullah-Geechee culture with songs that have been passed down for generations, portraying the resilience and perseverance of enslaved Africans. This tour is perfect for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of slavery in the United States, but be aware that the history is difficult. Please note that the tour does involve walking through cobblestone and brick alleyways, which might not be suitable for those with mobility issues.
